It became the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period, ruled by the Attalid Dynasty from 282 BC to 133 BC. The city of Pergamon was built on Kale Tepe, or Castle Hill, and there are many smaller mounds in the surrounding Plain of Bakırçay.
