Tour Description

This private full-day tour combines two of western Turkey’s most remarkable destinations in a single journey from Kusadasi. Departing in the morning, you head first to Aphrodisias — one of the finest archaeological sites in Anatolia, dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite and home to a near-intact Roman stadium, the Tetrapylon Gate, the Temple of Aphrodite, and a museum housing exceptional marble sculpture. From there, the route continues to Pamukkale, where snow-white calcium terraces cascade above the ancient thermal city of Hierapolis — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a monumental Roman theatre, a vast necropolis, and the legendary Cleopatra Antique Pool.

The drive from Kusadasi to Aphrodisias takes approximately 1.5 hours; Pamukkale is a further hour from there. We visit Aphrodisias first, before the midday heat and before coach groups arrive from Izmir and Denizli — the site is quieter in the morning and the stadium light is better for photography. At Pamukkale, removing shoes to walk the terraces is mandatory; the pools are slippery, so we pace the descent carefully. Lunch is included at a local restaurant between the two sites.

Tour Program

07:30 Hotel Pick-up

Your private guide and driver collect you from your hotel or cruise port in Kusadasi. Departure is early to reach Aphrodisias before coach groups arrive from Izmir. (approximately 15 minutes)

09:00 Aphrodisias Ancient City

Aphrodisias is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Turkey and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Begin at the Tetrapylon Gate, the monumental four-column entrance that once welcomed pilgrims to the sanctuary. Continue to the Temple of Aphrodite, later converted into a Byzantine church — its standing columns remain remarkably intact. The Sebasteion, a double-portico complex decorated with exceptional imperial reliefs, gives a vivid picture of Roman-era ceremonial life. The tour ends at the Aphrodisias Stadium, one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in the world, with a seating capacity of approximately 30,000. The on-site Aphrodisias Museum houses marble sculpture from the city’s celebrated school — among the finest in the Roman empire. (approximately 2–2.5 hours)

12:00 Lunch

A sit-down lunch at a local restaurant between the two sites. (approximately 45 minutes)

13:30 Pamukkale Travertines & Hierapolis

Pamukkale — meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish — is Turkey’s most iconic natural site, where thermal waters have deposited white calcium terraces over thousands of years. Shoes must be removed to walk the pools; the descent is slippery and we pace it carefully. Above the travertines lies Hierapolis, a Roman thermal city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the Roman Theatre, one of the best-preserved in Anatolia, and along the Necropolis — one of the largest ancient graveyards in the region, with over a thousand sarcophagi. The Cleopatra Antique Pool is available as an optional add-on for those who wish to swim among submerged Roman columns. (approximately 2.5–3 hours)

17:00 Return to Kusadasi

Your driver returns you to your hotel or cruise port in Kusadasi. Estimated arrival 19:00–19:30 depending on traffic.

Tour FAQ

Is this tour suitable for cruise passengers staying in Kusadasi?

Yes. The tour departs from Kusadasi Hotels or Kusadasi Cruise Port and returns you to the same location. Departure is at 07:30 to allow enough time at both Aphrodisias and Pamukkale. This is a long day — approximately 11–12 hours total — so it is best suited for passengers with an overnight stay in Kusadasi rather than a same-day port call.

How far is Pamukkale from Kusadasi?

Pamukkale is approximately 2.5 hours from Kusadasi by private vehicle. On this itinerary, we drive first to Aphrodisias (approximately 1.5 hours), then continue to Pamukkale (a further 1 hour). The return journey from Pamukkale to Kusadasi is approximately 2.5 hours direct.

Why visit Aphrodisias together with Pamukkale?

Aphrodisias lies almost directly on the route between Kusadasi and Pamukkale, making the combination natural and time-efficient. The two sites complement each other well — Aphrodisias offers archaeological depth with its stadium, temple, and sculpture museum, while Pamukkale combines natural spectacle with the Roman thermal city of Hierapolis. Together they create a more complete picture of ancient western Turkey than either site alone.

Can we swim in the Cleopatra Antique Pool?

Yes, as an optional add-on. The Cleopatra Antique Pool at Hierapolis is an ancient thermal pool with submerged Roman columns. It requires a separate entrance fee and is not included in the standard tour. If you would like to include it, please mention this when you send your inquiry and we will arrange access.

What is the walking difficulty on this tour?

Both sites involve moderate walking on uneven surfaces. At Pamukkale, shoes must be removed to walk the travertine terraces — the pools are slippery and we pace the descent carefully. At Aphrodisias, surfaces are largely flat and well-maintained. Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are recommended for both sites.

Can the itinerary be customized?

Yes. As a private tour, the program can be adjusted to your interests and pace. If you prefer to spend more time at one site or skip a section, let us know when you inquire and we will plan accordingly.
