Tour Description
Pergamon is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation — and one of the most dramatic ancient cities in Turkey. This full-day private tour from Kusadasi takes you north along the Aegean coast to Bergama, where the Pergamon Acropolis crowns a steep hillside 335 metres above the plain. Here you will stand at the Temple of Trajan, look out from the steepest ancient theatre in the world, and explore the site of the great Parchment Library that once rivalled Alexandria — all with a licensed private guide whose sole focus is your group.
From Kusadasi, the drive to Bergama takes approximately 2 hours. We time the departure carefully to reach the Acropolis before the midday heat and the peak of day-trippers arriving from Izmir. After the upper city, you descend to the valley floor for the Asclepion — the ancient healing sanctuary where Galen, the father of modern medicine, conducted his finest work. Walking the colonnaded Sacred Way, the underground therapy tunnel, and the sacred spring gives a completely different dimension to the day: not conquest and empire, but healing, ritual, and the roots of Western medicine.
Kusadasi hotel pickup is included. Entrance fees, a private licensed guide, and all transfers are arranged for your group. This tour pairs naturally with an Ephesus day as a two-day extension for travelers staying in Kusadasi or Selcuk.

Tour Program
08:30 Hotel Pickup
Your private vehicle and licensed guide collect you from your Kusadasi hotel. The drive north to Bergama takes approximately 2 hours along the Aegean coast road. Your guide will use this time to brief you on Pergamon’s history — its rise as the dominant Hellenistic capital of western Anatolia, its extraordinary library, and its place among the Seven Churches of Revelation as addressed in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 2.
10:30 Pergamon Acropolis
The Pergamon Acropolis sits 335 metres above the Bakir Plain — one of the most dramatic hilltop sites in the ancient world. You enter through the upper city and move through the Sanctuary of Athena, site of the ancient library that held an estimated 200,000 scrolls. From here the Great Theatre drops away at an almost vertical angle into the hillside — the steepest ancient theatre still standing, with a capacity of 10,000 and panoramic views across the plain. The Temple of Trajan crowns the summit, its columns partially reconstructed and oriented to face the sunrise. The Altar of Zeus — now housed in Berlin — stood on the terrace below; your guide will explain its significance both archaeologically and biblically, as the structure referenced in Revelation as “the throne of Satan.” (approximately 2 hours)
13:00 Lunch
Lunch at a local restaurant in Bergama town. (approximately 45 minutes)
14:00 Asclepion
The Asclepion of Pergamon was the most celebrated healing sanctuary of the ancient world — a destination where patients travelled from across the Roman Empire seeking treatment. The complex functioned as a therapeutic resort: patients slept in the sacred precinct, drank from the sacred spring, and were treated through a combination of ritual, diet, hydrotherapy, and dream interpretation. Walk the colonnaded Sacred Way that once welcomed pilgrims, pass the circular Temple of Telesphoros with its underground therapy passage, and stand at the sacred spring where patients began their cures. Galen — whose medical writings shaped European medicine for 1,400 years — was born in Pergamon and completed his early work here at the Asclepion. (approximately 1.5 hours)
16:00 Return to Kusadasi
Your driver collects you from the Asclepion for the return journey south. Arrival back at your Kusadasi hotel is expected by approximately 18:00, depending on traffic and your pickup location.

Tour FAQ
How far is Pergamon from Kusadasi?
Pergamon (Bergama) is approximately 130 kilometres north of Kusadasi. The drive takes around 2 hours by private vehicle, following the Aegean coastal road. We factor this into the departure time so you arrive at the Acropolis before the heat and midday crowds peak.
Why is Pergamon significant in the Bible?
Pergamon is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation — the cities addressed directly by letters in the Book of Revelation, Chapters 2 and 3. The letter to Pergamon references the city’s pagan temples and describes it as the place “where Satan’s throne is” — a reference widely interpreted as the Great Altar of Zeus, which dominated the Acropolis. For Christian and faith-based travelers, walking the Acropolis with this context gives the site an entirely different dimension.
What will we see at the Pergamon Acropolis?
The Acropolis tour covers the main upper city: the Sanctuary of Athena (site of the ancient library), the Great Theatre — the steepest ancient theatre in the world, carved into the hillside at a near-vertical angle — the Temple of Trajan, and the terrace of the Altar of Zeus. Your licensed guide provides historical and biblical context throughout.
What is the Asclepion and why is it included?
The Asclepion was the most famous healing sanctuary of the ancient world — a therapeutic complex where patients from across the Roman Empire came to seek cures through ritual, sacred water, diet, and dream therapy. Galen, whose medical writings shaped Western medicine for over a millennium, was born in Pergamon and worked here. The Asclepion adds a second, completely different layer to the day: not military and political history, but the origins of medicine and healing.
Is this tour suitable for cruise passengers from Kusadasi?
Pergamon is a long day from Kusadasi — approximately 10 hours door to door. It works well for cruise passengers whose ship has a full-day port call of 10 hours or more. We plan the departure and return timing based on your ship’s schedule. If your port call is shorter, we recommend discussing your arrival and departure times with us before booking so we can confirm the tour fits comfortably.
Can this tour be combined with an Ephesus visit?
The two sites are in opposite directions from Kusadasi — Ephesus is 20 minutes south, Pergamon is 2 hours north — so combining both in a single day is not practical. Many travelers staying in Kusadasi or Selcuk for multiple nights choose Ephesus on one day and Pergamon on another. We can arrange both tours as part of a longer stay programme.
