Tour Description

This private full-day tour combines Ephesus Ancient City with the three major heritage sites of Selcuk that most Ephesus tours skip entirely: the Basilica of St. John, the Temple of Artemis, and the hillside village of Sirince. Where a standard Ephesus tour ends at the lower gate, this one continues into the town of Selcuk — adding the apostle’s burial church, a Wonder of the Ancient World, and a centuries-old Greek village to the same day.

The tour begins at Ephesus Ancient City with the standard downhill walk from the upper Magnesia Gate — giving you Curetes Street, the Celsus Library, the Great Theatre, and the Temple of Hadrian before the morning crowds arrive from cruise buses. From Ephesus, we continue up to the House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Bulbul — a pilgrimage site recognized by the Vatican and visited by three popes. After lunch, the afternoon takes you through Selcuk’s own monuments: the ruined Basilica of St. John, built by Emperor Justinian over the apostle’s tomb, and the solitary column of the Temple of Artemis — once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The day closes in Sirince, a preserved hilltop village known for its local wines and Ottoman-era architecture, 8 km above Selcuk.

Tour Program

08:00 Hotel Pick-up

Your private guide and driver collect you from your hotel or cruise port in Kusadasi. The drive to Ephesus takes approximately 30 minutes. Departure at 08:00 ensures arrival at the upper Magnesia Gate before the first cruise buses, giving you a quieter first hour on site. (approximately 30 minutes driving)

08:30 Ephesus Ancient City

Enter Ephesus Ancient City through the upper Magnesia Gate and walk downhill along Curetes Street — the main ceremonial avenue of the ancient city. Pass the Trajan Fountain, the Temple of Hadrian, and the ornate facade of the Celsus Library, one of the largest libraries of the ancient world. Continue to the Great Theatre, with a seating capacity of 25,000 — the largest outdoor theatre in Anatolia — where St. Paul addressed the Ephesian crowd. The downhill route means the walk flows naturally, ending at the lower gate near the Arcadian Way. (approximately 2.5 hours)

11:00 House of the Virgin Mary

Drive up Mount Bulbul to the House of the Virgin Mary, a small stone chapel on the site believed to be where Mary spent her final years, brought to Ephesus by St. John after the Resurrection. Recognized as a place of pilgrimage by the Vatican and visited by three popes, the site is sacred to both Christians and Muslims. A spring at the entrance is believed to have healing properties. (approximately 45 minutes)

12:30 Lunch

A sit-down lunch at a local restaurant in Selcuk. (approximately 45 minutes)

13:30 Basilica of St. John

The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasuluk Hill above Selcuk, built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century over the believed burial site of St. John the Apostle. Once one of the largest churches in the Byzantine Empire, its ruined nave, columns, and marble floors give a clear sense of its former scale. The tomb of St. John lies beneath the central dome. The site sits within sight of the Isa Bey Mosque, one of the earliest Anatolian mosques, adding a further layer to Selcuk’s layered history. (approximately 45 minutes)

14:30 Temple of Artemis

A short drive from Ayasuluk Hill brings you to the site of the Temple of Artemis — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and, at its peak, four times the size of the Parthenon. A single reconstructed column marks the original footprint. The guide contextualizes the temple’s history and its significance to the ancient city of Ephesus, which owed much of its wealth to pilgrims visiting the sanctuary of Artemis. (approximately 30 minutes)

15:15 Sirince Village

The tour closes in Sirince, a preserved hilltop village 8 km above Selcuk. Originally a Greek settlement, Sirince retains its original stone houses, cobbled lanes, and 19th-century Orthodox churches. The village is known for its locally produced fruit wines and olive oils. A short walk through the main street allows time to browse the small market stalls and take in the views over the Aegean valley. (approximately 45 minutes)

16:30 Return to Kusadasi

Your driver returns you to your hotel or cruise port in Kusadasi. Estimated arrival 17:00–17:30 depending on traffic.

Tour FAQ

What is the difference between this tour and the standard Ephesus private tour?

The standard Ephesus tour focuses on the ancient city and typically includes the House of the Virgin Mary. This tour adds three Selcuk landmarks that most Ephesus excursions skip: the Basilica of St. John — built over the apostle’s burial site — the Temple of Artemis — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — and the hilltop village of Sirince. It is the longer, more comprehensive version of the Ephesus day, suited to travelers who want the full historical and cultural picture of the region.

Is this tour suitable for cruise passengers?

Yes, with one important note: this tour covers more ground than a standard Ephesus excursion and runs approximately 9–10 hours in total. It is best suited for cruise passengers with an overnight stay in Kusadasi or passengers whose ship has a late departure. For same-day port calls with a ship departure before 19:00, the standard Ephesus tour is a better fit.

What is the Basilica of St. John?

The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasuluk Hill in Selcuk, built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century over the believed burial site of St. John the Apostle. Once one of the largest churches in the Byzantine world, its ruined nave, columns, and marble floors give a clear sense of its former scale. It is an important site for Christian heritage travelers and complements the House of the Virgin Mary visited earlier in the day.

What remains of the Temple of Artemis?

The Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — at its peak, four times the size of the Parthenon. Today a single reconstructed column marks the original footprint. The site requires only a short stop, but in context — standing in Selcuk, with Ephesus behind you — the guide’s explanation of how the temple shaped the ancient city’s economy and identity makes it one of the most memorable points of the day.

How far is Selcuk from Kusadasi?

Selcuk is approximately 18 km from Kusadasi — around 25–30 minutes by private vehicle. The Selcuk heritage sites (Basilica of St. John, Temple of Artemis, Sirince) are all within a short drive of each other and are visited in the afternoon after Ephesus and lunch.

Can the itinerary be customized?

Yes. As a private tour, the program can be adjusted to your priorities. If you have a particular interest in the early Christian sites, we can spend more time at the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary. If Sirince is less of a priority, we can use that time elsewhere. Let us know when you inquire and we will tailor the day accordingly.
