Tour Description
This half-day private tour offers one of the most direct ways to visit Ephesus Ancient City — departing from your hotel in Selcuk, just minutes from the ancient site. With a licensed guide exclusively for your group, you will walk the marble streets of one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, visiting the Celsus Library, the Temple of Hadrian, the Trajan Fountain, and the Great Theatre at your own pace. The tour runs approximately 4 hours, with timing and sightseeing sequence fully adjustable to your group.
Ephesian is based in Selcuk — the village at the entrance to Ephesus. We operate this route daily and know exactly when the morning cruise groups arrive from Kusadasi. Starting early from your hotel means you reach the upper gate before the crowds build, giving your group the ancient streets largely to yourselves in the first hour. Optional visits to the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis can be added depending on your available time.
The price listed is based on a per-person rate for a minimum of four adults participating in the tour. This indicates that if there are fewer or higher than four adults, the cost may be different. You can fill out the inquiry form to get your customized itinerary and rates.

Tour Program
Step 1 Selcuk Hotel Pickup
Your guide and private vehicle collect you directly from your hotel in Selcuk — the village at the entrance to Ephesus Ancient City. The drive to the upper gate takes approximately 5–10 minutes, putting you at the site before the first cruise groups arrive from Kusadasi. Timing your entry early is one of the genuine advantages of staying in Selcuk.
Step 2 Guided Visit of Ephesus Ancient City
You enter through the upper gate and walk downhill along Curetes Street — the marble-paved main avenue of one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. The route passes the Temple of Hadrian, whose carved arch and Medusa relief remain largely intact, and the Trajan Fountain, which once delivered water across the city. The walk continues past the ornate facade of the Celsus Library, built to hold 12,000 scrolls and serve as the tomb of the Roman governor Celsus. At the lower end of Marble Street stands the Great Theatre, with a seating capacity of 25,000 — the same stage where, according to Acts 19, a crowd gathered in opposition to the Apostle Paul. For guests wishing to go deeper, the Terrace Houses — a separate ticketed section containing intact Roman frescoes, mosaics, and private baths — can be added at this point. Guide pacing is adjusted to your group throughout. (approximately 2–2.5 hours)
Step 3 House of the Virgin Mary (optional add-on)
A 10-minute drive uphill from Ephesus brings you to the House of the Virgin Mary — a hilltop sanctuary set in pine forest, traditionally believed to be where Mary spent her final years. The site is recognised by the Vatican and visited by Christian, Catholic, and Muslim pilgrims. The chapel is small and the atmosphere is quiet — a deliberate contrast to the scale of the ancient city below. (approximately 45 minutes)
Step 4 Temple of Artemis (optional add-on)
Located just outside Selcuk, the Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — once four times the size of the Parthenon in Athens. A single reconstructed column now marks the site. Brief but significant: its scale is best understood when your guide explains what stood here and why it drew pilgrims from across the Mediterranean. (approximately 20–30 minutes)
Step 5 Return to Selcuk Hotel
Private transfer back to your hotel upon completion, timing according to guest’s needs.

Tour FAQ
Does this tour depart from my hotel in Selcuk?
Yes. Pickup is included from all hotels in Selcuk. Share your hotel name when submitting your inquiry and we will confirm your pickup time.
How long is the tour and how much walking is involved?
The tour runs approximately 4 hours including transfers. The guided walk inside Ephesus Ancient City is approximately 2–2.5 hours covering around 2 kilometers on ancient stone paths. Terrain is uneven in places. The pace is adjusted to your group.
Are the House of the Virgin Mary and Temple of Artemis included?
Both are available as optional add-ons. The House of the Virgin Mary adds approximately 45 minutes; the Temple of Artemis adds approximately 20–30 minutes. Let us know your preferences when you submit your inquiry.
Can we avoid the cruise ship crowds at Ephesus?
Yes. Ephesian is based in Selcuk, minutes from the site. We monitor cruise schedules from Kusadasi and time your departure accordingly — typically before the main groups arrive. Starting from Selcuk rather than Kusadasi gives you a natural head start.
Is this tour suitable for senior travelers or guests with mobility considerations?
The tour is private and fully pace-adjustable. We will advise on the most comfortable walking route inside Ephesus Ancient City based on your group’s needs. For guests with significant mobility limitations, certain sections of the site may be challenging due to uneven ancient stone surfaces.
Are the Terrace Houses worth visiting?
Yes, for most guests. The Terrace Houses are a separately ticketed section of Ephesus Ancient City containing some of the best-preserved Roman domestic interiors in the world — intact frescoes, mosaic floors, and private bath complexes from the 1st to 7th centuries AD. They are covered and climate-controlled, which also makes them a good option on hot days. Your guide will advise on whether the extra time fits your schedule. They can be added as an optional extra when submitting your inquiry.
What is the best time of day to visit Ephesus from Selcuk?
Early morning — ideally arriving at the upper gate by 08:00 or 08:30. Cruise ships from Kusadasi typically dock between 07:00 and 09:00, and their groups reach the site by mid-morning. Guests staying in Selcuk are 5–10 minutes from the gate and can be inside before the crowds build. By the time the first large groups arrive, you will have already seen the Celsus Library and Great Theatre at a quiet pace. We time all Selcuk departures with this in mind.
